Yandex-developed Database Management System ClickHouse Ranks in World’s Top 50
Internet, June 15, 2021. Distributed database management system ClickHouse, created by Yandex, is the 49th most popular DBMS in the world, according to the DB-Engines Ranking. ClickHouse is also the only Russian DBMS in the top 50, with Oracle, MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server in the top three spots.
DB-Engines publishes one of the most respected rankings in the DBMS industry. Launched in 2012, the monthly ranking now includes 371 participants. It measures the popularity of each DBMS based on criteria including number of online mentions, general interest for the system, and how often a system is referred to in professional articles and discussions.
"The ClickHouse source code was published exactly five years ago to the day, on June 15, and the system has grown in popularity ever since. It first entered the DB-Engines Ranking at 275th place in September 2016, and now is the only DBMS from Russia in the top 50. During these five years, we have built an active community around ClickHouse, with more than 700 developers and over a thousand companies around the world using the system," says Alexey Milovidov, head of ClickHouse development at Yandex.
ClickHouse enables performance of analytical SQL queries in real time on structured big data. The first prototype of the system was created in 2009 to process data for Yandex’s web analytics service Yandex.Metrica. ClickHouse’s source code is published under the most permissive Apache 2.0 license. This DBMS is also available as a cloud service on the Yandex.Cloud platform, which offers all the system’s advantages without requiring configuration and maintenance.
Developers from all over the world, including from Russia, China, the United States and Europe, contribute to the development of ClickHouse, and about half of the source code is created by the community. The ClickHouse DBMS is used by global organisations such as Uber, Tesla, Spotify, Bloomberg, VKontakte, Wildberries, Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance.
