Moscow/New York, September 20, 2021. Yandex announces the spin off of ClickHouse, Inc., a pioneering company focused on open-source column-oriented database management systems (DBMS) for analytical processing. Created in partnership with Benchmark Capital and Index Ventures, ClickHouse will develop commercial products, such as a cloud-based version of DBMS and other solutions for large businesses based on the company’s open-source code.
Benchmark Capital and Index Ventures, Yandex’s partners in the new business are venture capital funds with a proven track record of building successful companies based on cloud technologies and open-source products. These include Confluent, Hortonworks, Elastic, Docker, MySQL AB, Cockroach Labs and other innovative companies, leveraging open-source technologies. Some of these are no longer startups, as they have grown into large publicly-traded companies with a capitalization of more than $10 billion.
"Thanks to its open-source release in 2016, ClickHouse became popular all over the world and is currently used across hundreds of companies, including Uber, Tesla, Spotify, eBay, ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent. Spinning ClickHouse off into a standalone company gives us an opportunity to build a business around our open-source code by providing additional services. We have put together an excellent team, which can realize the full technological and commercial potential of ClickHouse. Watch this space!" says Alexey Milovidov, head of ClickHouse Software Development.
ClickHouse is a distributed database management system that enables the processing of large amounts of data in real time. It is scalable, fault-tolerant and offers detailed documentation. ClickHouse’s performance is several times more efficient compared with that of similar column-based DBMS. This technology can be used for data storage and analysis, monitoring, business analytics and other day-to-day tasks of any technology business.
ClickHouse DBMS was developed by Yandex for processing the data from its web analytics system Yandex.Metrica. This technology was first launched as a prototype in 2009 and released as open-source in June 2016. More than 770 developers from many companies have contributed to ClickHouse since its open-source release five years ago. ClickHouse today is the 45th most popular DBMS in the world, according to DB-Engines Ranking.
